General Information on Freemasonry

Freemasonry is a discreet (and not secret) initiatory and philosophical society that brings together men and women around humanistic values. It offers a personal development approach based on reflection, exchange, and fraternity. Its objective is to improve the individual to better contribute to the improvement of society.

No, Freemasonry is not a religion. It offers neither dogma, nor salvation, nor life after death. It respects all beliefs and philosophical opinions of its members, provided they do not infringe upon the values of the Republic and Human Rights. Freedom of conscience is a fundamental principle.

Discretion allows Freemasons to express themselves freely, without external judgment, within a space of trust. It also protects the privacy of members. However, Grande Loge Universelle communicates publicly about its values, actions, and history.

Membership and Journey

Any adult (minimum 18 years old), of good standing and morals, with a clean criminal record, can apply. There are no requirements regarding degrees, income, or social status. The important thing is the sincerity of the approach and adherence to the values of Freemasonry.

Membership involves annual fees that vary according to the Lodges. These fees cover the operational expenses of the Lodge, venue rentals, and charitable works. They are generally between €300 and €800 per year. Initiation fees may also be requested.

To join, an amount of 666 euros is required.

The admission process typically takes between 3 and 6 months. It includes several interviews, a character investigation, and a vote by the members of the Lodge. Once initiated, the Masonic journey is a lifelong personal path.

Yes, there is total freedom to leave Freemasonry. A member can resign at any time, without justification. They nevertheless retain the memory of their journey and the fraternal bonds created.

Operation and Practice

A meeting (tenue) is a ritualized gathering of the Lodge. It includes the opening of the works, exchanges on a philosophical or societal theme (presentation/planche), and the closing of the works. Meetings generally take place once a month, in the evening, and last 2 to 3 hours. They are followed by a time of fellowship called "agapes".

A rite is a set of ritualized practices that frame Masonic work. Grande Loge Universelle mainly practices the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite (AASR), composed of 33 degrees. Other rites exist: French Rite, York Rite, etc.

Yes, the apron is an important symbol of Freemasonry. It recalls operative origins (the stonemason craft) and symbolizes work on oneself. It is worn during ritualized meetings and varies according to degree and rite.

The first three universal degrees are: 1. Apprentice (discovery and work on oneself), 2. Fellow Craft (deepening and transmission), 3. Master Mason (fulfillment and responsibility). Beyond these, there are degrees of perfection depending on the rites.

Values and Commitment

No, Freemasonry is not political. It does not support any party and does not participate in elections. However, it reflects on societal issues and may issue recommendations or proposals on matters of general interest. Each member remains free regarding his personal political opinions and commitments.

Absolutely not. It is strictly forbidden to use one's Masonic membership for professional or commercial purposes. Lodges are not business networks. Any breach of this rule is subject to sanctions.

Yes, there are co-Masonic and female grand lodges. Grande Loge Universelle is a masculine grand lodge, but it recognizes and respects other forms of Freemasonry. Each grand lodge has its own specific characteristics and history.

Yes, solidarity and fraternity are fundamental values. Freemasons participate in charitable actions and support social works. Grande Loge Universelle has structures for mutual aid and support for the most underprivileged.
